Artichoke at 161 Middle Road

Artichoke’s cuisine is Modern Moorish, drawing inspiration from the flavours and traditional recipes of Turkey, Lebanon, Spain, Greece Morocco - regions united by a common thread that winds its way back to Arabia.

-

Our brunch Sundays continued today as we set off to find Artichoke. Armed with the native iPhone app (Maps) and gothere.sg, we thought we could find Artichoke easily. After all, it’s Singapore. How difficult could it be to find an eatery in town? Much less in the same district J was studying in?

Very.

We took at least 20 minutes, walking around in squares and rotating our phones to find our bearings. 397 meters. That’s what Google maps said Artichoke was from Bras Basah MRT’s Waterloo exit. After multiple crossings at the same traffic light, we came to the conclusion (yet again) that we couldn’t join The Amazing Race. We found the place soon after.

I strongly advice those who plan to visit Artichoke to make a reservation, especially if you mind sitting by the bar, or outdoors on a sunny and humid day. Unaware of it’s popularity, we had to settle for a bar seat, which wasn’t too bad given the air conditioning right above us.

Lamb Shakshouka / $24 - Eggs simmered in a spiced tomato sauce, braise lamb, homemade labneh, pistachio dukka & toast

J ordered the Lamb Shakshouka, as recommended by both the waitress and his sister. I had a little of his dish and it reminded me of the Tunisian breakfast from Wild Honey, except with lamb instead of sausage. And less spicy. I don’t really fancy lamb as it has an overpowering taste at times, but I didn’t taste any of that in this dish. That was a plus point for me. The lamb was tender, and the tangy tomato sauce complemented it really well. Overall a good dish, but definitely not worth the $24 price tag that came along with it.

Scrambled Eggs and Smoked Bacon Chop / $20 - Soft scrambles, maple glazed bacon chop, blistered grape tomatoes, rocket & toast

Being the brunch addict I am, I had to try their much raved about scrambled eggs and bacon chop. The star of this dish wasn’t the scrambled eggs though. They were relatively hard (as compared to Australia Dairy Company’s) and had a rough texture to it. Perhaps it was due to the high volume of customers that forced them to cook their eggs in one huge bulk then portion their eggs, or maybe it was because I’ve tasted better scrambled eggs elsewhere (e.g. Food For Thought, or Australia Dairy Company). But their eggs were substandard. The bacon chop reminded me of kong bak… except it was really sweet. The star of this dish was the sourdough toast. I loved it. It was just the right thickness and toasted perfectly. Yet again, overpriced.

Sticky Date Pudding / $14

Of course we had to squeeze in a dessert. There is always room for one. This pudding had caramel malt bits together with crushed pistachio nuts atop the date pudding. This was a little too sweet for me, and trust me, I already have a sweet tooth.

Overall, food was good, but not great. Will I return? Yes. But only when I’m feeling like I’ve got a couple of extra bucks.

Goodbye February, hello March.

Haiku sounds like I’m
Saying hi to someone named
Ku. Hi, Ku. Hello.

In the past few weeks, I have:

  • Celebrated my brother’s 7th/28th birthday (leap year kid, no pun intended),
  • Went for my first ever shoot (and had such a pleasant surprise),
  • Had dim sum four times in two weeks,
  • Went swimming (and will hopefully be swimming on a weekly basis),
  • Posted on Instagram way too much (add me there - abcdeunice),
  • Caught the Titanic exhibition at Marina Bay Sands’ ArtScience Museum,
  • Bought overpriced Cadbury mini eggs for $5.95/100g,
  • Discovered this awesome new pictionary game on the iPhone DrawSomething,
  • Cringed every single time I saw Courtney on the Bachelor and ***SPOILER AHEAD*** think I will cringe even more when I see Ben propose to her ***SPOILER END***
  • Cut my hair

and… am seriously planning for a short getaway soon.

I’ve also submerged myself in a Spring Awakening trance and am enjoying every track on Tay Kewei’s new album “Fallin’”. Counting down the days till Glee returns…

P.S. I’m so glad D is back this week!!!

Australia Dairy Company / 澳洲牛奶公司

-

Why is it called Australia Dairy Company when it obviously is 99% Chinese? Long queue? Check. Rowdy crowd? Check. Sharing of tables? Check. The only thing non-Chinese about this place is the steady inflow of tourists thanks to the relatively rave reviews on the WWW.

We heard about the snaking queues beforehand and started off our day bright and early… at 9am. Pre-Disneyland breakfast… here we come! We were greeted with queues that extended till two shop units down and had no choice but to join it. Thankfully, we were seated (albeit with another family on the same table) in less than 10 minutes! Good thing those in line before us were in larger groups.

Hospitality there is dismal. I don’t blame them though, they’re probably twice as busy as normal cha chan tengs (茶餐厅s) in Hong Kong. We were shoved the menus the second we ordered and felt really pressured as the waiters continuously took turns to drop by asking us what we wanted to order. Half the time was spent trying to read the chinese menu and deciphering what exactly we were ordering. Thankfully, a fellow Singaporean told us to “just order Set A (HKD$26), it contains everything famous”.

I don’t normally eat breakfast, so for me to chow down ham macaroni, toast, scrambled eggs with a drink was quite a feat… or so I thought. It was easier than I thought! My favourite? Definitely the scrambled eggs! The toast with butter comes a close second. It might sound simple - toast with butter, but I have no idea how they make white bread so fluffy and magical.

Pardon me. I just salivated.

The macaroni with ham was mediocre, just your typical macaroni in MSG-loaded chicken broth topped with strips of chicken ham. But the eggs are a totally different story. Thick, smooth, creamy, scrumptious, fluffy, rich and perfect

We ordered the steamed egg white pudding with milk (HKD$17) too, which my friend H describes as “the best thing in the world”. I wouldn’t go so far to attribute it as the best thing, but it’s rich and exquisite texture sure makes it a great after-meal dessert!

Other things to try - the steamed egg pudding, 牛奶橙汁 (orange juice with milk, might sound like a weird concoction, but I like it!).

Getting there: Take the MTR to Jordan Station, exiting at C2.

Food For Thought

Full Works (Scrambled Eggs, Bacon, Garlic Mushrooms, Chunky Chicken Sausage, Hash Brown, Toasted Brioche with Roasted Tomato Salad) | Grilled Calamari & Bacon Salad (With Torch Ginger & Coriander Lime Dressing) | Duo of Pancakes (With Milk Chocolate and Banana)

On the last day of my lunar new year 2011, I had an incredible brunch with the boybestfriend at Food For Thought at 8QS. We were both craving for breakfast food and Food For Thought fit the bill perfectly, delivering when expected.

My favourite dish to order, Full Works, arrived promptly, a mere five to ten minutes after we placed our order. It was the first time J had brioche, and he loved it! My favourite? The round balls of potato! Too cute to resist. Golden brown and cripsy on the outside, with mushy potato hidden within. I’d prefer these bite-sized cuties over McDonald’s hashbrowns anytime.

We had the Grilled Calamari & Bacon Salad to share too, and though I was hesitant ordering this (I hate ginger, and it has a Torch Ginger & Coriander Lime dressing), I’m glad J insisted on this. The marriage of ginger and the lime dressing gives it a tangy kick, complementing the varying textures of squid and crunchy bacon bits.

And lastly… the pancakes. I’d recommend sharing this with another - of the three times I’ve been to Food For Thought, I’ve never been able to finish it. In my opinion, the gula melaka syrup drizzled (albeit excessively) over the pancakes overpowered the bananas and the chocolate. The next time I have this, I’ll request for the gula melaka syrup to be served separately.

Nonetheless, yet another delightful Sunday spent with J!

P.S. Check out Clara C’s cover of Jason Mraz’s “I Won’t Give Up” here. Awesome sauce.

P.P.S. This is the first time I’m using my Canon S95 since Chinese New Year in 2011.

P.P.P.S. Happy Chinese New Year everybody!
